Simplifying Expressions with Rational Numbers

Learn it

Use the distributive property and combine like terms, even with negatives and fractions.

βˆ’3(2x βˆ’ 5) = βˆ’6x + 15. Watch the sign: a negative times a negative is positive.

Β½(4y + 6) βˆ’ y = 2y + 3 βˆ’ y = y + 3.

Worked examples

Example 1

Simplify 5 βˆ’ 2(3a βˆ’ 4).

  1. Distribute βˆ’2: βˆ’6a + 8
  2. 5 βˆ’ 6a + 8
  3. Combine constants: 13 βˆ’ 6a

Answer: βˆ’6a + 13

Example 2

Simplify 0.5(8m βˆ’ 2) + 1.5m.

  1. Distribute: 4m βˆ’ 1
  2. 4m + 1.5m βˆ’ 1

Answer: 5.5m βˆ’ 1
