Adding and Subtracting Integers

Learn it

  • Same signs: add the absolute values and keep the sign. βˆ’4 + (βˆ’6) = βˆ’10.
  • Different signs: subtract the absolute values and keep the sign of the number with the larger absolute value. βˆ’9 + 5 = βˆ’4.
  • Subtracting means adding the opposite: 3 βˆ’ 8 = 3 + (βˆ’8) = βˆ’5, and 2 βˆ’ (βˆ’7) = 2 + 7 = 9.

Think of a number line: adding a positive moves right, adding a negative moves left.

Worked examples

Example 1

Find βˆ’12 + 7.

  1. Different signs: 12 βˆ’ 7 = 5
  2. βˆ’12 has the larger absolute value, so the answer is negative

Answer: βˆ’5

Example 2

Find βˆ’3 βˆ’ (βˆ’10).

  1. Subtracting a negative means adding the opposite
  2. βˆ’3 + 10 = 7

Answer: 7

Practice

Try these on paper first, then check your work.

  1. βˆ’8 + (βˆ’5)
  2. 15 + (βˆ’20)
  3. βˆ’6 βˆ’ 4
  4. 0 βˆ’ (βˆ’9)
Show the answer key
  1. βˆ’13
  2. βˆ’5
  3. βˆ’10
