Adding Fractions with Unlike Denominators

Learn it

You can only add pieces of the same size. To add 1/3 + 1/4, rename both fractions with a common denominator. The least common multiple of 3 and 4 is 12.

1/3 = 4/12 and 1/4 = 3/12, so 1/3 + 1/4 = 7/12.

Steps: find a common denominator โ†’ rename each fraction โ†’ add the numerators โ†’ simplify.
